web designer

So I was just reading in the computer arts projects magazine (all about web design this month) that apparently big footers are the next big web trend (as in, large end-of-page divs… not sasquatch). They’ve reference webdesignerwall.com as being one of the leading large footer users (but… imo, that’s more of an actual functional area rather than a footer…), which is one of my favourite sites by way of design (and the fact that it runs on good ol’ wordpress too!).

Of course, one of the trends I love right now (and hope it carries on) is the final realisation that glossy buttons and web 2.0 style headers are OUT. get your pencils out kids, it’s the way forward.

So Firefox 3 was finally released yesterday! Wahooo! I’ve been using it throughout the day at work, with an upgraded firebug addon, and I must say it’s nice. A little slicker than 2, with a slightly different rendering in some areas. I also upgraded on my mac last night, which threw up some random rendering on some websites - think safari’s quirks here, not ie. The tab experience is very different on the mac, not so much on the PC.

Apart from that, here are some things that have been annoying me about websites lately, and things to avoid in all new designs!

  • frames - who the hell still uses frames?
  • window resize - honestly, I’ll have my window the size I want it, ok?
  • image ready rollovers - c’mon kids, CSS is much cleaner!

On a plus note, I’m loving scanned elements at the moment, and I’m working on a project using scanned items now!

That’s all :)
