Red Shirt Alert

Posted by Adam on March 24th, 2010

Oh Hi again,

So much for a monthly astronomy post… These jodcasters do it better anyway.
Instead here is a geek post! How lovely for you!

So a short while ago Kim, Schicken and I commenced watching Star Trek: The Original Series from the start.  Awesome in and of itself I know, but to increase the entertainment factor I started keeping track of the number of deaths suffered by each uniform colour, i.e. command Gold (Yellow), security/engineering Red and Science Blue. I then proceeded to tweet the episode by episode score with the hash-tag #TOSscore.

The danger of wearing a red-shirt is well documented on these here intertubes, but is it really true? Here is the end of season one break down (with a few of my favourite tweets from the #TOSscore tag).

Series One Breakdown:

  • Safest Colour: Blue – 3 deaths over 28 episodes
  • Longest Safe Run: Blue – 0 deaths over 25 episodes
  • Most Dangerous Colour: Red – 6 deaths over 28 episodes
  • Most Dangerous Run: Yellow – 3 deaths over 3 episodes
  • Highest death rate (single episode per colour): Yellow & Red – 2
  • Most Deadly episode: “Where no Man has gone before” – 3 (2 Red, 1 Blue)

Who wants a graph?!?:

This is the episode by episode plot of the TOSscore.

Worlds most self-evident legend?

As you can see, some episode were rather more dangerous than others! (Also there are 29 episodes in season one. The Menagerie parts I and II were counted together, ie after this all episode number out by 1).

Favourite Tweets:

  • Episode 22: “Space Seed”
    #TOSscore red-shirts 5, blue-shirts 3, yellow-shirts 5 + KHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN (Remember when he ruled 1/4 of Earth from 1992 to 1996?)
  • Episode 14: “Balance of Terror”
    #TOSscore red-shirts 4, blue-shirts 3, yellow-shirts 2 + Wait isn’t that Spock’s Dad? (“Theres an awful lot of Plaster on that Romulan Ships” @TJx00)
  • Episode 9: “Dagger of the Mind”
    #TOSscore red-shirts 4, blue-shirts 3, yellow-shirts 1 +What am I, a Dr or a moon shuttle conductor?(=! Boon Scuttling Dr. @finestimaginary)
  • Episode 7: “What are little girls made of?”
    #TOSscore red-shirts 4, blue-shirts 3, yellow-shirts 1 + Kirk and a highly suspicious rock (see @finestimaginary’s latest tweet!)

Concluding remarks:
So far so bad for the reds, however things aren’t great if you are a yellow! Thank <insert deity of you choice> that I work in Science. It’s my recollection that the red-shirt danger increases in season two, plus we’ve yet to meet Mr. “Nuclear Wessels” himself Chekov meaning things can only get more entertaining. So until the end of season 2, keep your eye on #TOSscore and your red-shirt in the wardrobe.

Ohh we saw Avatar!

Posted by kim on February 2nd, 2010

SO we finalllllly went to see Avatar on Sunday, we were hanging on until we could get tickets for the iMax (Imax? is everything that starts with an i meant to be written in the apple standard?) 3D showing. I went in with no expectations, I’d previously thought it’d just been supremely hyped and wasn’t going to be that good. I mean, don’t get me wrong, I saw titanic at the cinema 5 times (yes. I know.), so I knew that Mr. Cameron was capable of some good cinematic shit, but my god the hype surrounding Avatar has been pretty immense.

Straight off the bat I’ll say that the story is weak sauce, not terrible, but not very original. If you’ve seen that Pocahontas story outline with the names changed floating around on the internet then you pretty much get the gist. Luckily the film isn’t really about the story, it’s a giant ‘Look how pretty!’ pissing contest entry that should hopefully pave the way into some beautifully rendered digital effects.

It is stunning, no bones about it. There are points in the film where your concept of digital effects and reality become so warped that you start wondering if they did actually find some random 6 legged dog and put it in mask. The massive fly over shots of Pandora were amazing, just as filler they probably cost more than a regular Hollywood film.

I came out with my expectations gladly beaten around the face.

This is a dog in a suit from TOS, the ones in Avatar were much better.

Oh hey, this is the chick that played Uhura in Trek 11, but blue.

Weekly good stuff, all y’all!!

Posted by kim on November 13th, 2009

Oh hi, I didn’t do one last week because I’m a slacker. SO let’s catch up…

Don't make me get all iambic on Y'all!

  • This will be the best video you see all month. Without a doubt.

4031091011 f08c0a8dae Weekly good stuff, all yall!!

boxed and labelled

  • A few books for you this week, the first is this great one on modern packaging design. The preserves packaging is quite apt, I’ll be making some new labels for mine and Adam’s christmas kitchen delights soon!
  • D&D style resume, guaranteed to get you the job!
  • How to make your own Thai green curry paste, definitely something I’ll be having a go at in the future!
  • I can’t get a decent photo of these hardbacks, and the amazon one has that silly ‘look inside’ thing on. Meh. In Waterstones the other day, I spotted these super pretty hardback versions of His Dark Materials. With my dire financials atm I can’t really quantify dropping £60 on them, alas! Amazon has them for the measly sum of £11 each rather than £20. They’ve most definitely been added to my wishlist. This is the Northern Lights copy.
  • OMFG how good are google docs? I have actually become obsessed with them this week. We’ve got a spreadsheet on the go with our ‘christmas extravaganza holiday freetime’ days planned out. One days I’ll screen grab so that you can all be privy to how odd my household is. ‘oh hello Mr.Snowman how the devil are you?

trek shoes

  • Star trek kicks? OH HELL YEAH. If any of my american readers fancy, you know, sending me some, that would be dandy. I’m going to ask the parents to bring me some back from florida. ‘Oh Hi, florida? SEND ME STAR TREK SHOES k thx’
  • Speaking of my parents and their Floridian holiday, I’ve been skyping with my mum… best chat message ever ‘hot topic’s full of that actor you like, dad says he is a vampire’. Honestly, I’m not a twihard. Nor am I a furry, don’t ask me why I’m on a furry fandom list on twitter.

treklamp Weekly good stuff, all yall!!

  • Oh, I definitely would. I’m not sure where it would go, though. Trek light fitting! I’m excited for the Huddersfield christmas lights switch on, I think that Jean Luc Picard himself is doing the honors! Either him, or Professor Xavier.
  • Tenuous link (they were both in Hamlet), but are you psyched for the new Dr. Who?! I AM I AM!

Photo 15

  • And finally, seeing as there’s not many photos in the post, have a Me, with my new fringe. Here I am being delightful.

Have good weekends! What are you guys up to? I’m going to dash around Manchester perhaps wearing my new boots, and then I’m going to drink wine! FUN. TIMES.

  • Dead taun taun wedding cake. Fuck. This is amazing, they never do this kinda shit on Ace of Cakes. WHY? Anyway, hopefully it smelt/tasted better than the innards of a real taun taun. Did I just say ‘real’? Yes, yes I did. You should also know that I often come out with shit like ‘I sometimes like to imagine I’m being chased by an AT-AT, it makes me move with haste’. Luckily for you all Adam bares the brunt of these random outbursts.

Ahoy there! It’s Weekly Good Stuff!

Posted by kim on June 19th, 2009

Good morning & hello, apparently today is the happiest day of the year, happyhaps! It’s ridiculously sunny outside (apart from that ominous cloud… boo) and I woke up with a kitten foot in my face, so I’m totally buzzy :D:D

Cinderella in real life

These works place Fairy Tale characters in modern day scenarios. In all of the images the Princess is placed in an environment that articulates her conflict. The ‘…happily ever after’ is replaced with a realistic outcome and addresses current issues.
  • We’ll kick the week off with this delicious set of photos from Dina Goldstein. The images represent real life depictions of fairytale princesses when their happily-ever-after hit a fail. Lovely, dark imagery… although I would have preferred un-disneyfied costumes for this set, but princess costumes are hard to come by I guess! More here

  • I’ve been looking for new art for the house, this was featured on a blog somewhere yesterday and I bookmarked it straight off. Lovely! Infact, a lot of the stuff in this store is super cute, http://www.bodieandfou.com/

  • Kudos to HBO/digital kitchen and their advertising campaign for Trueblood, featured on the CR blog. This campaign sees HBO join forces with other companies to create a great viral ad series.

jans sport pink daiquiri bag

  • I needed a new bag for work, mainly because I want to start walking down. At the moment I have a shoulder bag with my laptop and other bits in, and then an extra bag full of notebooks, sun lotion, pencils etc. Not very good for walking with due to shoulder killage. Anyway, I found this jansport bag on amazon yesterday and it even has a laptop section! So I snapped it right up :)
