The Kitchen… slowly getting there

Posted by kim on June 8th, 2009

We had a good week in the house last week and got a tonne of work done on the kitchen. Being ikea flat pack, Adam and I spent some evenings when we got back from hong kong assembling all the cabinets, ready to be put in the kitchen later on. The cabinets on the wall were put in last weekend/friday of last week, and all the other cabinets were arranged into their rightful places. This weekend Adam and his dad put the tall cabinets into place and secured them. Everything is slowly starting to come together, and a few of our worries about the space/layout have been resolved.

ikea wall cabinets

Here you can see the wall cabinets, all the cabinets are from the ikea faktum range (and will eventually have applad door fronts). We’ve gone for a simple corner arrangment, with a large double cupboard for crockery and mugs, two slim shelving cupboards and a corner shelving cupboard. I must say that the ikea corner cupboards are a really great use of what can sometimes be pretty dead space! All our wall cupboards are the tallest ones, meaning we have minimal gap above them (which we may even close off eventually anyway). Reasoning behind this…. have you ever checked the top of your kitchen cupboards and found the grease? yeah… exactly.

Again, we’ve taken care to use the space the best we can, making use of the corners that would otherwise be a pathetic ether. The corner cupboard here will have a fancy single concertina style door that pulls open to reveal a carousel shelving unit. The larger cabinet on the right will have the oversized hob on top of it, one dead drawer just below that, and then two other drawers. There’s also a smaller drawer unit just out of view. The gap where all the wires currently sit will be the spot for our washing machine, again with a smaller drawer cabinet to the left of it.

Here’s where our kitchen get s a bit strange. Due to the length of the kitchen, and the annoying placement of a the pantry door, we’ve had to put our cooker quite a distance away from the hob. It’s going to live in that central wall unit, but! it’s not so weird because we have a kitchen trolley, so any hot food will be put on that. You’ll see.

Speaking of the oven…

And here’s the hood. This should be able to go up this week, too.

Floor sanding & some colours

Posted by kim on April 27th, 2009

First thing Saturday morning, Adam headed out and rented us a barrel sander & edge sander. The floorboards in our livingroom were pretty decent quality, so instead of cladding them in laminate we decided to strip them and varnish them. The results so far are ace, the wood’s a lovely antique pine so it’s come up as a honey colour full of knots and ripples.  We’ll be varnishing it some time soon :)

Also, you can see the green (dulux taragon glory 5) we’ve picked for the lounge in the photos above, and here are the colours we’ve picked in the two bedrooms (ocean clear b&q colours, and dulux amethyst falls 2… my small studio room is still stuffed full of things, but that’s gunna be yellow!).

Bank Holiday Weekend House Progress

Posted by kim on April 23rd, 2009

Wow, so this is only about a week late :/ My bad. Last weekend we got TONNES done in the house (it was a bank holiday so we had friday/saturday/sunday/monday to ACHIEVE). By tonnes I mean the majority of the rooms wallpapered and painted =) It’s actually starting to resemble a use right now, which is epic. We also felled the last of the gross tree’s in the garden (now, now, before you say anything, we’ll be replacing them at some point with easier to control fruit trees). Without further ado, have some photos…

new toilet

ZOMG new toilet! We had to go on an epic journey for this toilet after B&Q in Huddersfield LIED to us about them having some in stock, losers. Anyway, we finally got one and now it works so we can pee and all is good. It’s the only thing in the bathroom right now, seeing as ikea didn’t have out sink cabinet and the people we bought the bath off might actually be fraudsters. Fun times!

Renovation Progress

Posted by kim on March 1st, 2009

Hi kids, no weekly good stuff this week because.. wow… I’ve been a busy bee! Between running around organising kitchen’s, phoning plumers & electrical people during the week, this weekend has been jam packed with ripping out the house! So I gave you some very much ‘before’ photos in my last post, things have progressed slightly since then…

renovation

During the week Adam and our Dads have been ripping the place completely out. No built in wardrobes remain, most of the kitchen is gone, this weekend we got all the wall paper off… not a carpet in sight! So right now the house really is a shell, beautious!

renovation

We also found around 100kg of lead piping, so we’re totally selling that to pay for some of the decorating :D:D Luckily no scary suprises yet – apart from a massive underground storage area in the kitchen… Weird. A lucky find was that the flooring in the lounge is really decent floorboards, so instead of sticking laminate down we’re gunna sand the fuck out of it and varnish it up a treat! ♥

My little studio room was stripped today by Adam’s granddad, and it’s so much nicer already… decided on a warm yellow and red theme for that room, wizard of oz style! Think… ruby slippers on the yellow brick road. We also got all our plug sockets & new light switches marked up, my Dad’s cutting the holes out so that the electrician can do things a little faster/cheaper :D

renovation

Tomorrow we have a guy coming around to see how much the damage will be for moving the boiler, fixing the random array of copper pipes and fitting another couple of radiators. Preparing to take quite a big hit on that one :/

So, I’ll keep you updated, and you can see more/larger photos on flickr :D Also, head over to http://www.finestimaginary.com to check out the new packaging design that arrived this week.

POS House: The before shots

Posted by kim on February 24th, 2009

Well, we got the keys to our new house today! Adam took my camera with him this morning to get some photos of how it looked to start. Since then my Dad, Adam and his brother have been working all day ripping the place out. There aren’t many carpets left, the horrid polystyrene ceiling tiles have gone from most rooms, a random fire has been taken out of the kitchen (along with half of the cabinets) and the master bedroom has had this giant inbuilt wardrobe monstrosity taken out. All in all a damn good days work from the guys! I went over after work and ripped a few chunks of wallpaper off the walls in the kitchen :)

My Dad’s heading to the tip with a tonne of the stuff tomorrow, too, but hopefully the rest of the kitchen should be out and maybe even the old skirting boards off. Adam and I will be headed to ikea tomorrow to make final arrangments for our kitchen and (fingers crossed!) get a completed design and perhaps buy it :O Madness, it’s gunna be the best kitchen ever, orange walls eeee!
