haggis, neeps & tatties

Sunday night was Burn’s Night, and we celebrated this year with a huggggeeeee haggis served with neeps (swede) and tatties (mashed potatoes). Instead of regular mash we added a sweet potato for extra tastiness. Our swede was just bashed with salt, pepper and a little butter. We got a huge haggis though, didn’t notice the ‘serves 7-9′ on the side… Anyway, we steamed it for 2 hours and it grew to about double it’s original size. I can’t rememeber the last time I had haggis, but I definitely enjoyed it last night! Definitely as it was washed down with a wee dram of my favourite whiskey!

I’m sure some of you don’t know what a haggis is, right? Well it’s basically… offal. Yep, a sheeps stomach stuffed with oats, onion, suet, seasoning and… pluck. Pluck being the sheep’s heart, liver and lungs. Yummy! I used to be a vegetarian, you know.

And theres me thinking a haggis was a wee scottish animal which could only walk one way round scottisch mountains because the legs on one side were longer than on the other!
