Let the Right One In: Sweet relief in these twiHard times.

I’m always up for a good vampire movie, with the Lost Boys possibly being my all time favourite. Alas, in these times of Twihardism it’s getting pretty difficult to not appear like a fang-girl. I’m not gunna say I hate the Twilight saga, I’m compelled to it like a car crash, I think that’s more to do with pretty boys rather than story lines, though.

Last year I came across some discussion of an indie film coming out of Sweden that was causing a bit of a stir in the vampire world. ‘Låt den rätte komma in‘ is a subtle love story between two 12 year old kids in the suburbs of Stockholm, one of whom happens to be a vampire. The story is bitter sweet with a haunting setting, the cinematography plays really really well with the subject matter, and both the young actors take their parts very successfully. There’s a lot of vampire lore in the tale and, having not read the book and reading the synopsis of the film on IMDB later, there’s a lot of nods to the original book. We caught the film at a special screening by our local cinema, but you can get hold of it on DVD from amazon from August 3rd.

Unfortunately, as with any popular foreign movie, Hollywood think they can do it better. They’re untaking a ‘remake’ of an already beautiful film, probably set to iron out those subtleties and make the film understandable for Middle America & cash in on the current resurgence of vampire popularity. Hollywood, when will you learn to leave things the fuck alone?

I didn't know hollywood was gonna take a remake of it… I read that one guy from hollywood wouldn't want to change and do a remake of such a beautiful film. (I read it in a debate over Let the Right One In vs. Twilight on google).

I didn't expect this horror film to be quite a pleasant subtle romance, I only discovered it while reading over some movies recommended on the plane back home.

I'm not much of a horror movie kind of guy but I was curious and this was really unexpected.

I still want to understand more of the film and I am anticipating for the book. I might check if they have the book in Dymocks or something today.

I haven't seen or read Twilight but I guess hollywood should just let some beautiful films be.

I think money doesn't always get the most attention from people into movies, especially ones with 2 and a half hours of long and repetitive special effects.

    • yeah, having read the synopsis of the book, I think that it definitely needs to be read. There seems to be a few parts of the film that are explained better in the book, and just alluded to in the film. If anything, I hope that twilight brings on a slew of good vampire films in it's wake!
