From the ages of about 13-16/17 I was full on vegetarian, and then I got lured to Canada with the promise of amazing Salmon, and then to South-western USA with the promise of delicious steak. That caused me to fall off the wagon big time, I even take my steak rare nowadays.

Truthfully we don’t eat that much meat anyway, maybe one or two meals a week have mince or diced turkey in them. It’s just too expensive (and unnecessary) to eat meat every day, we prefer to have substitutes like tofu where we can.

One of my 27 things to do before I’m 27 was try at least a month of full-time vegetarianism again, just to see if I could still do it, how difficult I’d find it, and what health benefits I’d feel. Adam decided to join me and we started our vegetarian month on June 1st.

So far things are pretty much as they were before, we’ve substituted most things easily (sausages, burgers etc) and we’re also making the effort of cooking some more adventurous vegetable based dishes (See aubergine & corn tacos).

One of the most difficult encounters I’ve had so far was in the sandwich fridge at Sainsbury’s, out of the myriad of sandwiches I think there was just cheese or egge & cress to choose from. I ended up getting a hummus wrap that was pretty boring. Put some fucking effort in Sainsbury’s.

I think after this month I’ll probably be eating even less meat, our supermarket shops have cost around £10 less each week so far which is quite a saving! I’ll report back at the end of the month :D

The vegetarian sandwich situation is pretty dire everywhere, yes. Boots has the best range! good luck with the month of veggie-dom.

I’ll have to check out boots, really sucks how little choice there is… I think if there was a wider choice then more people would go for the veggie option, especially as the veggie options tend to be a cheaper alternative too!

So brave! I don’t think I could talk Johnny in to going veggie for a month.

I was a vegan for about 4 years and it was hard. Now I do the weekday vegetarian- so during the work week i am a vegetarian and then on the weekends I can splurge and get a burger with out feeling guilty. I completely agree with you more restaurants need to make an effort. :)

Kim there is a wonderful cafe in Covent Garden called ‘Food for thought’ http://foodforthought-london.co.uk/Default.aspx (crap name, but hey!), it does the most amazing food that just happens to be vegetarian. Meat just doesn’t come into it, you don’t even miss it. The food is all fresh and really tasty. The queues for the place at lunchtime are literally round the block, menu changes every day.

The people that run FFT have brought out a cookbook, it is excellent. Just bought it actually. Tried a few things in it and all wonderful.
