2012 in review

I’m writing this earlier than I’d normally do my yearly ‘review’ type post, and this year I’m doing things a little differently. In the past I’d post a month-by-month account of what I got up to, posting the odd photo from each month. This year I’m going to look at the past 12 months as a whole and write down my accomplishments, gratitudes & stand-out moments.

WORK LIFE

I completed my first full year of working for myself without going broke, and I even made my company into a limited company. I worked with some AMAZING clients this year, and helped then realise their website dreams. I’m grateful to have been able to collaborate, brainstorm new ideas, and hash out all kinds of juicy things with friends. I’ve increased my rates (which is scary..!) and been able to justify hiring an accountant.

For 2013 I’d love to see my business grow, I’m going to be working on a new part of my web design business that I’m itching to release!  I’d love to see Finest Imaginary being stocked further and wider, and the range developing & expanding with my own style and vision.

HOME LIFE

Our lounge is inching towards being finished, which is a weird one as we’ve been living here for a few years now but we’ve only just got around to installing a fire surround. The new garage has to be one of the biggest accomplishments in our home this year, even though it’s been quite last minute. Little things like finding a way to store all the bottles of gunk and shampoo in the bathroom, fixing doors onto the expedit bookcase and hanging up long-stored artwork has made me love my home more this year.

We’re redecorating a little in the coming weeks, painting a wall here and there, adding a new blind and putting together a new headboard. I’ve started to realise that home decor, at least for me, is an evolution. There’s no way I’d have the time, money or patience to complete a room from the get go – and there’s nothing wrong with that!

2013 has to see my declutter, clear out, and sell shit on ebay. It has to. This desk can’t continue…

HEALTH, FITNESS & DOWNTIME

I took some time out this year to get back to the gym, at one point I was taking in around 4-5 gym classes a week. I completed the 30 day shred and felt the best I’ve ever felt, physically. Okay okay, so I’ve dropped the ball a bit this past month – but it’s the busiest time of year for Finest Imaginary and unfortunately something had to give. As soon as 2013 arrives it’s my personal mission to get back into a gym routine that I’m proud of.

I’m grateful for having the ability to take the afternoon, day, or even week off if I wish. It’s amazing how much mental clarity can be gained from spending a few hours reading Tolstoy watching the Kardashians.

I’ve eaten cake on the streets of Venice during Carnivale, I’ve drunk whiskey in the Scottish Highlands and I’ve seen the Bavarian crown jewels in Munich. 2013 – show me more!

I want to take more time off and really unplug next year. Could I aim for 4 day weeks?! Could I?! I’m already putting plans into place to allow me to take these steps.

Overall 2012 has been one of the best of my adult life, and a lot of that has to do with my work. I’ve never felt more pumped about my career, and actually want to get to work as early as I can because I enjoy it so much! I’m excited to see what 2013 has to bring, could it be the year we move out of the UK? the year my business starts employing people? Or is there some other exciting new adventure just around the corner?

I’d love to hear your 2012 list, what are you proud of and what stands out for you this year?

This is such an amazing and inspirational post. Reading about your story and your journey only gets me more inspired (and a little bit more confident) about maybe taking on the same route towards self employment someday. It can happen!

Also, if you think your desk is messy, you should see mine!
